![]() Sure, same deal in Half-Life, but in Half-Life, Gordon never talks, so it's just a bit of a weird decision here IMO. Characters ask him questions, and he just doesn't respond, or other people respond for him. Characters notice this and mention how silent he is. On the topic of voice acting: Artyom has a voice actor! Artyom has a voice! He talks during every loading screen! Yet, for some reason, in gameplay, he's a Mysterious Silent Protagonist, and never says a word. There's also some weird gaps in between NPC actions, where nobody says anything for like 10-15 seconds. Some of the characters are convincing, other times the pacing of their speed (i.e. So, while the stations looked alive, that didn't quite translate into gameplay. Although there are a handful of exceptions, the only meaningful things to do are to buy guns and ammo, find the person you need to talk to, and then leave. = The metro stations are alive and rich, full of people having conversations that you can listen in on, and so many little details that make them almost real. On the topic of atmosphere and immersion: Sounds glowing so far, but that's where the positive ends unfortunately. Still frustrating, but when that happened, I was annoyed with myself, not the game. If I died repeatedly, it was because I had been too trigger happy earlier, or picked the wrong guns, and I was facing the consequences for my actions. I have some caveats to this that I'll address later, but I never felt like it was too hard. + The difficulty was done right in my opinion. ![]() (I will note there was one time where I suffocated during an in-engine cutscene and I had to redo the preceding fight, that kind of pissed me off, but I can admit that maybe I made a mistake earlier in the level.) I was on my last filter for my gask mask, running around looking for a crate somewhere, and finally stumbled upon an extra minute of reprieve from suffocation. There were moments where I had a dozen bullets to my name, running around dark tunnels, finally running across a body with a few bullets on it that could sustain me for a bit longer. ![]() + The survival, scavenging nature of the game is excellent. + The music! Especially during tense scenes, it's very fitting. Although I haven't read the books, you can tell 4A tried to make the world of the novel come to life and it shows. Many of the guns look cobbled together and worn, especially when you start putting on attachments. Your gas mask gets smudged, and is damp from condensation. The metro is dirty, claustrophobic, and oppressive, and the desperation is palpable. The surface is desolate and hostile, the sun is harsh, and the wind is strong. The game looks great, the environments are full of detail. + If Metro has a reputation for anything, it's visuals and atmosphere. I feel like this game had a ton of potential for being incredibly deep and immersive, it swung, and it didn't quite hit it. After a lot of thought, I have to slightly edge towards Not Recommended.
